What Is Afterburn?
Afterburn is the post-exercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) your body goes through. What this translates into is your elevated metabolism after a workout, or simply, the calories your body continues to burn after your workout is done. Afterburn can last anywhere from 15 minutes to 48 hours, depending on the intensity and duration of your workout.
Calculating exact afterburn is difficult because size, gender and type of exercise comes into play. The general rule tends to be that the longer and more intense the workout session, the more afterburn effects you will receive. According to Dr. Len Kravitz and Chantal A. Vella authors of Exercise After-burn: Research Update, after-burn’s ”general range is about 30-120 calories for 30-60 minutes of cardio (including cycling and treadmill) at about 80% of your maximum heart rate”.
